When it comes to the Internet and business website design, there's a lot of technical jargon. Here are most popular terms you should understand.
Above the fold - The part of the website visible before scrolling down the page.
Blog - Short for web log which is basically an online journal. This can be used to communicate with friends, customers or just let the world know what you are up to.
Content Management System (CMS) - This is an easy to use back end where you can add, change the information or content on your website. Popular CMS software includes Joomla and Drupal.
CSS - Abbreviation of Cascading Stylesheets which is a way of controlling how your site looks. It gained popularity in recent years and is now the primary way of coding the websites front end.
Database - Information that is stored for the computer to use and manipulate. Popular database platform for the web includes MySQL.
Domain - This is the address of your website. Your visitors input this address to find you on the Internet.
Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) - This is the main language used for web pages.
Keywords - Important words that defines what a web page is about. Search engines use it heavily to determine your ranking.
Keyphrases - Important combinations of words that defines what a web page is about. Search engines use it heavily to determine your ranking.
Pay Per Click (PPC) - A form of Internet advertisement where you pay based on the number of clicks you receive to your website. Popular PPC platforms include Google AdWords, Yahoo Search Marketing, MSN AdCenter.
Search Engine - A website that catalogs and indexes virtually all websites. User can enter "keywords" in the search engine to find relevant websites.
Search Engine Marketing (SEM) - A form of Internet marketing where the website is promoted through paid online advertising, google adwords for example.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) - Using various techniques to increase the rankings of your website in search engines in order to get more visitors.
Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs) - The pages that show up when a user searches for a keyword. The first page is considered the most crucial.
Web Design - Design and development of a website which can be seen by potential customers, and other visitors.
Web Host - A company or service provider which will host the files needed to display your website.
Website Conversion - A measure of the percentage of visitors to your website that complete a desired goal or action such as making a purchase.
Website Redesign - Updating a website to improve or change things like usability, integrating a content management system, or improve website conversion
Website Templates - A pre-made website that can be changed and manipulated to suit your needs.
WYSIWYG - Short for "What You See Is What You Get". This is a type of software which allows you to build your website visually rather than analytically.
